Building on your learner’s stage three skills
In stage three, your learner started to develop their skills on multi-lane roads and in busier environments.
In this stage, they’ll gain experience in all driving situations, continue to develop their independent driving skills and rehearse what it’s like to be a solo driver.
As your learner progresses through this stage, they’ll start to practise as if most of the responsibility and decision making is up to them. But you'll still be at their side in case they need you for advice, suggestions and help looking for potential hazards.
By the end of this stage, your learner should be able to drive comfortably in all situations without your help.
When you and your learner agree, they can think about going for their Ps if they meet all the legal requirements.
The longer your learner spends in stage four, the better prepared they’ll be for solo driving.

Before your learner starts stage four, you should both agree they’re able to do these tasks safely in all conditions with some support:
- Turn across oncoming traffic safely.
- Use their hazard perception skills.
- Keep a safe distance from other road users in busy traffic.
- Drive on roads of all speed limits.
- Change and merge lanes.
- Choose safe gaps when entering traffic.
- Slow down smoothly.
- Drive through busy intersections.
- Control their speed.
- Plan their own drives.
